Heading into Wet Season, Drought Conditions are Expected to Persist

Even with above-average rainfall predicted for the wet season, drought may continue in Maui County and Hawaii island. It has been three straight La Niña years, a cyclical weather pattern of cooler sea-surface temperatures that alternate with the warmer ocean temperatures of El Niño. The current situation is not as rare as it seems. During the last time it happened, drought prevailed as it is predicted to in Hawaii now. During the dry season from May to September, many locations in the state experienced the highest level of drought. Learn more about the drought on Maui.

Financing Being Requested for West Maui Hospital Construction

A $7 million grant-in-aid is being sought by the builders of a new hospital on the Hawaiian island of Maui. The 30,000 square foot, single-story West Maui Hospital will be a licensed critical access facility. It will have an emergency room open around-the-clock, radiology labs, a pharmacy, and outpatient services. The request for a new hospital from the community has encountered a number of roadblocks. The construction is projected to cost about $20 million when it is finished, bringing the total development expenditures to about $38.5 million.
