Paia Town is the hub of the North Shore community. It has excellent restaurants, exciting shops, and a fantastic natural food store. As you pull into Paia, you are mystified by the Old-west style building facades painted in a patchwork of pastel colors. At first impression, the slight T-shaped stretch of quaint shops and restaurants is reminiscent of a 60’s beach town. A stroll through Paia can have you brushing by famous actors, professional surfers, new-age mamas, and street corner preachers. Traveling north out of Paia is Haiku, where Maui’s north shore meets upcountry. Haiku’s appealing character is of rustic charm and of being undeniably “off the beaten path.” The copious amounts of rainfall found in Hana provided water to the dry central part of Maui in the 1800’s. It was used to quench the King crop of Hawaii, sugar. Remnants of the old sugar mills are still present and sugar cane grows wild in some fields as a testament to the long history of sugar in Maui’s agriculture and economy. A name well recognized on Maui is Alexander and Baldwin. It was in Haiku that Samuel Alexander and Henry Baldwin began Hawaii’s largest sugar company.
