Maui County Receiving Almost $70 Million in State Funding

State funds will aid with many local Maui County improvements

A total of $69,762,356 state funding will be released to Maui county to fund capital improvement; many of these projects will focus on Public facilities and nature conservation. These funds were released in April, May, June, July, and August to promote safety and health from the state government by investing in various infrastructure improvements and restoration.

One million dollars was released in the transportation sector to cover the full cost of Honoapiilani Highway improvements from Mile Post 10.5 to Mile Post 18.0, with construction slated for completion by January 2023. $12.4 million was released to design and construction rockfall protection and slope stabilization To mitigate incidents on Hana Highway from Huelo to Hana, at various locations between those points. $6.4 million was released for Molokai Airport repavement and improvements. $15.7 million was released for gate improvements at Kahului Airport and other various projects to improve the airport. All project’s total costs are about $65 million, and construction is estimated for completion by December 2023.

Many other projects outside of the department of transportation are receiving funding.

Major funding for necessary facilities, including hospitals and correctional centers. $12 million will fully finance various capital improvement projects for Maui Health Systems.

Baldwin High School received $7 million to construct new physical education and athletic facilities. The Maui Community Correctional Center will be receiving $1.2 million to assist with construction projects.

The Maui District Baseyard Office will be receiving an expansion and renovation of their building. This project is receiving $5.7 million.

$3.5 million was released to fund Kula Agricultural Park infrastructure improvements.

Napili Bay and Beach Foundation Inc. will receive $75,000 to replace the public access stairs.

Kihei Elementary School was allocated $270,000 for improvements and current ADA standards.

Funds also were released to help with various local conservation efforts.
