Hale Pono Youth Shelter – Safe Space for Maui At-Risk Youth
A new shelter for at-risk youth in Maui has started its construction process. This transformative program will offer a free safe place for youth aged 12 to 17 facing difficult challenges. The goal for youth at the shelter will be reunification with family and safe long-term solutions. The shelter is being privately funded by Sulara James and Genesis Young, founders of the James Young Foundation.
“The idea of it is to be very inclusive and be for anyone 12 to 17 who needs a short-term sanctuary while we work out long-term solutions. We are not a treatment facility of any kind. The only requirement for a youth to come in is to have a need for something short term and safe, and as long as they can clothe themselves, feed themselves and aren’t a danger to themselves or others, those are really our only requirements.” – Director David Litman
