Central Maui is comprised of Kahului, Maui Lani, Waikapu, Wailuku, Waiehu, and Maalaea. Kahului is the center of business in Maui. Most of your chain stores and commercial needs are all near the airport. There are many residential communities throughout Kahului, including Maui Lani, a 1,012-acre master-planned community located in the heart of Central Maui. Just 10 minutes west of the Kahului Airport is Waikapu and Wailuku, the commercial center and the county seat of Maui’s government. Nestled at the foot of the dramatic West Maui Mountains, Wailuku is the gateway to lush Iao Valley, once a sacred burial ground for Hawaiian chiefs and home to the iconic Iao Needle. There are charming wooden storefronts around Market Street, showcasing dozens of family businesses, many of which have been in continuous operation for generations. These off-the-beaten-path “Mom and Pops” are home to local favorite shops, restaurants, and bakeries. Wailuku has more than 23 fascinating historical and cultural attractions, including Kaahumanu Church, the Bailey House, Pihana Kalani Heiau, and the Iao Theater, built in 1927. For all nature lovers, the Hawai‘i Nature Center is found in Wailuku. Ka‘ehu Beach is also popular. Many parks can be enjoyed, including Mokuhau Park, Kepaniwai Park, and Wells Park. Just north of Wailuku is the residential area of Waikapu. Maalaea is on the southern end of the central Maui valley. Here you will find ocean-front condos with magnificent sunset views. There are lots of activities, from whale watches and snorkel boats to the aquarium and restaurants, all just within walking distance of each other.
